I'm beginning to look for something to replace my current commuter car , a '94 Escort. The focus SVT has my attention. Has anyone driven one?

Just read the April issue of Mustangs & Fords. On pg 16, they give a rave review for this car.

I have one, they are fun to drive, but the regular Focus is very close to it in the fun factor. Plus the SVT Focus uses Premium gas which is beginning to irritate me. However I don't mind buying Primium gas for my '66 GT-350. Not logical , I know...

But for a daily driver, it's getting under my skin to shell out the extra $0.15 to $0.20 per gallon.

I'm at 15K miles and the motor is still strong, but is beginning to make a little noise (rattle) at idle, probaly no big deal. I don't think Ford pushed this car enough publicity-wise, it has always gotten good reviews, but has only average sales numbers. I guess thats way they are discontinuing it.

Can't talk specifically to the SVT Focus, but we've had the SVT COntour for 6 years now, and have been quite happy in general. These cars didn't get the press they should have, and I think that's why they are a little unknown.
I would go with the SVT version, even against the premium fuel issue, because you get a 6 speed to go with it, as well as more power, and better brakes. When you need them, you can never have enough braking. The price differnetial doesn't seem that big, especially if you option up a base Focus to the SVT level.

Carl,
I second your thoughts on the SVT Contour. Ours is also black, and is used sparingly. It's surprising how much attention it gets from fellow motorists. As they look it over, it seems they are trying to figure out what kind of car it is. When they see the FORD emblem, they get a more puzzled look on their face. It's a shame Ford doesn't make a similar sedan anymore.
