Hello, I have a 64.5 Mustang with an Eaton power steering pump.

What type of power steering fluid am I supposed to use? The dip stick says Automatic Trans Fluid"A" Hot.

Does Hot mean check the level when the car is hot.

Any help is much appreciated.

Ditto on GT289.
Type F Automatic Trans Fluid.
Run the engine to normal temp then pull the PS dipstick to check the level. I usually fill it while the engine is running so the fluid maintains temp.

FYI, "A" was superseded by "F" in the mid 1960's and specified by Ford as the power steering fluid for about everything they made until the mid-'90's. "F" is good to use in everything that originally specified "A".

And yes "hot" means it is full at that mark when fully warmed up.

While most transmission fluid is just colored hydraulic fluid, and many 'power steering fluids' are the same, minus the red dye, there are different additives. Type F is more resistant to foaming than most, and that is very important for the early Ford systems. When they become aerated, they run very hot and cause erratic steering.
