SSBC brakes - A Cautionary Tale for others considering them

I will try my best to keep this respectable, and it is not intended as a bash fest, but rather to caution others on my experience with SSBC brake kits. After researching (apparently not well enough), I chose two SSBC bolt on kits - the W110-11(rear) and W120-13(front) kits.

As an overriding statement(again from my personal experience) I can say that SSBC's quality control is poor, and their customer service is next to non-existent and not at all helpful.

With regards to the W110-11 kit - the hub diameter of the rotors provided does not match up to the axle hub. They provide a so called adapter that matches neither the diameter of their own rotor, nor the diameter of the axle hub. In addition to this, the lug holes drilled in the rotor are drilled to 9/16 for a 1/2 stud??? The brake pads themselves are very poor quality and i replaced immediately with EBC pads. As for getting your e-brake cables to fit - forget about it. After researching quite a bit, I have found that this was a known problem by SSBC for many many years and still not corrected. How helpful was SSBC customer service for my issues with the W110-11 kit? - not at all, and most times didn't even bother to respond!

Now, for the W120-13 kit. After installation, the rotors showed a 21 thousandths runout - you could visibly see the wobble in the rotors. After contacting the so called SSBC customer service, indicating to them that is seemed like it was a problem with the hubs, and after a long time waiting i was sent a new rotor(without hub) to try. Took everything apart, installed the new rotor to their hub, and same thing. As it turned out both of the hubs that were provided with the kit were machined incorrectly with the inside rotor mounting face being off 11 thousandth from one side to the other. Sent this to SSBC "customer service", and guess what - SSBC has not even responded to my phone calls or e-mails. If this were not enough to consider, the "quality kit" provides low quality installation parts - the bearings and pads provided are very cheap/low quality and I replaced them immediately. So, in conclusion for this kit, in addition to the money spent on this so called "quality" kit, I had to spend another 300 at the machine shop to even make it work - and SSBC doesn't seem to care.

If I had it to do over now, I would take the advice of helpful and knowledgeable people like Shaun and Opentracker on my selection of brake kits. I will never do business with SSBC again.

Again, this is my experience with these particular kits. Do your research before you buy - and as I have learned doing this restoration - I cannot say enough for the importance of Quality Customer Service!

Several posts on here about SSBC.
They are ok if you know you're totally on your own for customer support and that you will be following the rough
concept of their kit but re-designing several elements to make it work correctly. (i.e.: you have a lathe, a TIG,
a MIG, a drill press and you're above average at using them for fabrication work)
I used them recently (first time since the 90's) on a rear disc kit.... the experience of which I chronicled here....

I used this kit hoping I would not suffer too much and because just about all of the rear kits out there are far
too big.

SSBC has been this way since when they expanded their business from SS sleeving of Kelsey Hayes 4 piston
calipers into what it is today.

Had mine for 7 years and couldn't be happier. Quality materials.

This is my gripe with SEVERAL manufacturers of parts for vintage cars and Mustangs in particular. There is quality control, but so hit and miss that we always have legitimate accounts of how great the parts work, and just as many accounts of how dismal the parts fit, and nobody cares at customer service. There just doesn't seem to be enough emphasis on doing right for the customer that got the short end of quality and poor customer service. To change this situation, there has to be a BIG dip in sales, otherwise we won't get their attention.

I purchased front and rear SSBC back in ~ 2001. I experienced quality and customer service problems. Complete set came w/o special length parking cable, what? Crap brake pads. The calipers were touching the disk, they said it was the spindle. Not the problem, calipers were machined incorrectly. It took weeks to fix the problem through the run around. Never again SSBC, even though you are from my hometown.

SSBC has 2 people that work in Tech Support. When I was having issues with my Quick Stop Rotors, the 1 Tech Support person that was in that day did not have any solutions. My rotors were shipped w/o bearings, and he did not know which ones I needed. They came w/o dust caps and as the hub was a different size my originals would not work. Again, he could not help me. In both cases, SSBC did not have the items to ship to me either.

I had to do a lot of research, and running from parts store to parts store to get what I needed. Like others, I will find a different vendor next time.

I’ll make this short and sweet. I bought some SSBC front caliper set.got them in the mail brought them to mechanic he said they don’t fit. Numbers on the box and numbers on the package plastic wrapping or correct numbers for my 2014 GMC Sierra install instructions or for a 2018 Ford F150 and once I looked at the numbers on the Calipers their self turns out there for an F150 Ford Not my truck at all. Too much hassle from them to send them back. I’m going to sell them to a friend for 300 bucks. The place is a joke.
