Could it be that the hole in the chasis is to small and I simply Need to cut it a bit wider??
Congratulations on having a 4-speed, which is what I suspected.
Automatic and manual used the exact same hole in the floor.
You have a 1970-1971 factory Hurst shifter. The tab on the rear, with the hole in it, is for the backup light switch. The switch and retainer, and associated wiring harness, are available new.
After spraying the shifter with WD-40, spray again, later, inside and out with white lithium grease.
First, make sure the small levers on the front end of each rod are oriented as shown.
Adjust by loosening the bolt in the slot at the rear end of each rod.
Wiggle the levers to confirm the 1-2 and 3-4 levers are in the center detent, neutral.
Do likewise with the reverse lever, which has only engage and neutral.
Spin the driveshaft to make sure it's not in gear.
Center the levers on the bottom of the shifter, and slide a 1/4" pin into the hole at the bottom of the shifter housing, which centers all the levers in neutral.
Tighten the adjusting bolts.
Remove the 1/4" pin.
Test drive the car.
