Could it be that the hole in the chasis is to small and I simply Need to cut it a bit wider??
Congratulations on having a 4-speed, which is what I suspected.

Automatic and manual used the exact same hole in the floor.

You have a 1970-1971 factory Hurst shifter. The tab on the rear, with the hole in it, is for the backup light switch. The switch and retainer, and associated wiring harness, are available new.

After spraying the shifter with WD-40, spray again, later, inside and out with white lithium grease.

First, make sure the small levers on the front end of each rod are oriented as shown.

Adjust by loosening the bolt in the slot at the rear end of each rod.

Wiggle the levers to confirm the 1-2 and 3-4 levers are in the center detent, neutral.
Do likewise with the reverse lever, which has only engage and neutral.
Spin the driveshaft to make sure it's not in gear.
Center the levers on the bottom of the shifter, and slide a 1/4" pin into the hole at the bottom of the shifter housing, which centers all the levers in neutral.
Tighten the adjusting bolts.
Remove the 1/4" pin.
Test drive the car.

Oh man this is the type of work where you wish you could lift that Thing a bit higher :) Anyway I took two shots. One Shows the allen wrench after adjustement inside the neutral hole. The other pic Shows the other Connection and I think that is where the Problem is coming from. The linkage for gear 1 and 2 is the one on the left side. If you try to put in gear 2 the lower part of the linkage bumps into the linkage of 3 and 4. My Feeling is that they somehow mixed the linkages or installed them in the wrong directions.

Not sure what rod means?? I did everything according to the instruction. Put the shifter into Neutral and then loose the bolts and adjust everything with the hole. What concerns me a bit is that the drivshaft still was blocked and you could not spin it??

ehhh! how is that going for you?
thats definitely a top loader and I bet by the linkage bushing stuff a 71-73 vintage stock looking linkage. (stock hurst for ford) so I hope you have the car that is worthy. 70-73 mach cleveland cobra jet but from my recollection of your hole (again only limited info) you have a 65 to 68 there. Thta said it all should still work. But I wouldnt make the bet that you wouldnt have to neatly just make the hole a little larger/2 slices and bend it up or whatever works. But dont cut the tunnel just yet or unless you have too..
Back to your pics.. the first of you pics that show the side of the trans..in that one photo the middle of the pic is your reverse gear.. then the 1,2 and then the 3,4.

ok bartyls xlnt photo says your rear plate is upside down.

currently when you put it in first it is actually second due to the upside down plate.

I played some more with it and I think I know what the Problem is but not how to solve it. I made three pics of the linkage for gear 1 and 2. First pic is in gear 1, second neutral and third 3. I am able to get 3 engage if I loose the Connection to the shifter. By having the linkage in my Hand I am able to shift. There are two issues then when I try to get into gear 2 and I hope you can see that from the pics. The linkage is almost touching the Transmission already when I go into neutral. Then in gear 2 it hits the linkage of the reverse.

your linkage rods are hooked up wrong, the one closest to the tail shaft needs to be flipped and the center one needs to be flipped. here is a pic from the under side of my car to compare with.

your reverse rod is on the bottom, bartyl's is on the top. your car does not use the reverse lockout.

bartl sent you a photo. i told you how to fix it in post 28. you have not done anything.

yes this is the correct answer to his problem.

ok i think that reverse is forward on the 70 and later shifters which is what he has. i could easily be wrong though which would make bartlys assy wrong and i ain't goin there, lol..
ya you have a point, mine is all 1967. and I ain't going there either. but it appears that the back linkage is in fact up side down.

Sorry some postings were done while I was working on the car and so I could not respond. The current Status is that I fliped the attachment of gear 1 and 2 the one that was making Trouble. This one works!! I know that the reverse works so I do not really want to touch that. I am now able to go thru all the shifter Positions. I am not able to test drive the car because the Brakes are not working yet. How about the driveshaft not moving even shifter is neutral??
The shifter still bumps into the Chassis but it is almost at the very end of the shifter Position so maybe there is only 2-3mm I Need to make the hole wider at this Point.

@ Dan: Thanks for the pic! I think that the Center has two attachments one on the top and one on the bottom this one is currently empty as you see on my Picture. Do you think I should try the lower attachment?? I do not know if the rod would fit there but I could try that tomorrow.

the trans plates self center to a degree.

loosen rods on shifter

install alen

move plates on trans until they feel properly located

lift rear end in the air

turn driveshaft.

if shaft turns tighten rods

remove allen

cut hole slightly if needed or i'll give you $150.00 for that old used shiifter and you can go buy a new hurst that fits!

You will need to adjust your linkage again after flipping the plate over, and you should be able to get some side clearance if needed by adjusting the trans. mount.also may get some room by loosening the bolts that hold the shifter to the tail housing and adjust and retighten the bolts.
