I need to replace the tailshaft bushing in my 66 3 speed but the tool to remove it is expensive. Short of going to a transmission shop to have it done, is there any other way to remove and old bushing? Is this a tool that can be rented? Thanks

The way I do it is to remove the tailhousing and drive the old bushing out then drive a new bushing in. The tool to do that with is the trick. People say to take it to a transmission shop because they are of the few people that have invested in a set of bushing drivers such that one will fit what you need. A set of non-specialized drivers from SnapOn can cost $900. (Ask how I know.) Two ways around all that. Find something that is ever so slightly smaller in diameter than the bushing that you can beat on. Second, make something. Unfortunately, handy bits of wood and plastic around a handyman's shop won't do it. The bushing will act like a knife and slice into that stuff. I've made my own drivers out of randon pieces of steel I turned down on a lathe. If you happen to know someone with a lathe capable of doing steel, ask a favor. If it's a hobbyist, he'd probably be glad to blow the dust off it and make something "easy" and useful to someone.

Though you can knock the old bushing out with a screwdriver or whatever, it tends to gouge up the inside of the housing. Much better to wait until an install tool comes available and use THAT to knock the old one out cleanly.

I don't know about a 3 speed, but on my 4 speed, I used a small, sharp chisel and hammer to cut through the bushing along the oil tunnel. This takes the tension out of it and it can be removed. This is with the tailshaft off the transmission and on a solid surface.
