TMI "Hump Hugger" console or Classic Consoles "Hump Hugger" console

I'm looking to get one for my 66 fastback. Which console do you have and why? Are any of the cup holders in either one big enough for a large McDonalds drink cup? The Classic is $100 cheaper and seems to have a more padded lid, but I have never seen either in person. I know the cup holders are arranged differently but not sure that would make a difference.

Thanks!

I added a couple of aluminum "boat" cup holder inserts to make my hump hugger style (some other brand) hold larger cups.
Had to trim the lips at the top where they rest against each other, but the final results seem good.

I made my own...will hold any large drink....but I didn't use conventional cupholders because of a lack of depth...I used brushed nickel desk grommets :ROFLMAO:. Sometimes you are forced to compromise!(I still have yet to make buckets so the condensation doesn't go down to the floor:

I just wasn't happy with any of the consoles on the market(they wouldn't fit my grafted tunnel anyway, and the S197/S550 consoles do not fit the style of classic car at all)...so I pulled out the fiberglass and cobbled something together to suit my needs...and then covered it over in vinyl and pretended angle aluminum was trim. 🤷‍♂️

Holy smokes! I just looked at the price of the TMI "Hump Hugger" that goes onto the console and just about fell over. That's the one I have in my vehicle now. I remember my family paid $127 for it just a few years ago as a gift...talk about inflation! The one thing that I have an issue with the TMI setup is when I shift into 2d or 4th gear, my hand hits whatever is place in the forward cup holder such as a cup, phone, wallet, etc. If it sticks more than an inch or so above the rim of the holder, my hand is going to hit it.

I use the saddle style on top of my original. Pretty much useless cup holders except for cans. Makes a good armrest on long drives and a useful storage compartment. Also easily removable at shows. Added a glove box running horse emblem on the front of the storage compartment for a little style but works for me.

Proper consoles added a "looks feature" to the car. Cupholders were invented by the Europeans to sell cars in Merica. It seems to me that the european concept persuaded the female that "can't live without my cup of coffee" people to have a feature that American cars did not. Hence the center padded consoles and cup holders.

Personally, I never let anyone eat or drink inside my vehicles. Let alone my Mustang. It's not a kitchen table I am driving. It is a car, meant to be driven from point A to point B (the kitchen table).

I love the curmudgeonly response!

Personally I don't think the look of most aftermarket consoles "fit in" with the rest of the interior, if that interior is mostly stock.

Comes back to the age old debate, are you driving an old car because you want the old car experience, or are you resto-modding it to be the best 60+ year old car it can be?

I bought the classic console a while back. I actually love it a lot despite it not working perfectly with my setup. I can't put it on my bench seat between the driver/passenger seats because my shifter will hit the front end when going into second and fourth gear. I haven't been able to isolate exactly why this is, but it's probably due to the aftermarket Hurst shifter and shift handle I have installed. I put the middle seat back down and the console on top of it and it works, but I'm not able to strap it down between the seats.

The finish and quality of the console is more than satisfactory, and the two cupholders work for most drink cup sizes

I have one of the old Classic Consoles Hump Huggers that I trimmed to be a Saddle type when I installed the less common original Aqua console. The cup holders suck for anything except small water bottles or soda cans. I often drink from very large cups so they end up sitting in the storage area or I end up holding it and I just use it for the armrest and Storage on a long trip. I've been thinking about putting in a pair of big daddy cup holders. What can I say? I drink a lot. Maybe their newer model has larger cup holders.

You might be better off trying to find something else. I really wanted a center console in my 65 coupe. During my search I realized TMI and Mustangs to Fear made VERY nice center console's but wanted a kings ransom for them.

I kept searching and found a guy local to me who made one for the 65/66 Mustangs out of fiberglass. It was pretty much a blank slate. I had to figure out how I wanted everything laid out (i.e. radio, shifter, Handheld ECU screen, cup holders, switches, etc.). Once I got my layout taken care of I had to cut everything out. Then I took it to an upholstery shop and had them use the material I wanted and the color stitching I wanted. I also had them make a padded arm rest as well.

I spent $200 for the console itself and another $200 for the upholstery. I have a little more invested in the cup holders, switches and shifter boot. However, now I have something that works, is unique and is built exactly the way I wanted.

That console looks really nice made out of fiberglass.
I doubt I could get anyone in California to build one for $200.
I can't even get a fiberglass subwoofer box for that price.
I am not even sure I could get my local upholstery shop too cover for that price.
I did like the MTF Consoles but the starting price was $800.
The TMI one when I bought it at a couple Christmas' ago was $549.
I have seen some really nice DIY consoles on this site.
I really wish I had those kind of skills.

I have a Hump Hugger in my 69, it does the job but it isn't awesome. The cup holders are small, they just sit in place loosely and come out easily. The entire console just sits on the trans hump and is held in place with 4 velcro straps. Like I said, it serves a purpose, looks OK but not 1st prize by any means and definitely over priced now for what it is.

Mine is from Classic Consoles.
  • It's appears to be decently built.
  • Two size cup holders.
  • The fit is decent but not perfect. The center section is curved to fit the tunnel but the front and back are flat and probably should have been built up a little higher to allow the center to fit snugger.
  • It comes with velcro at the front and rear so it can get a good bite to the carpet BUT it will bite hard and if you have to pull it out it will tug on the carpet strands. I ended up covering the velcro as the unit fits snug enough between the seat to stay put.
  • As for the cup holders, since I have a Hurst stick I can't really use the smaller cup holder as it interferes with 2nd and 4th gears. Sure you could pull it back further then you get out of the comfort zone with the arm rest. Btw, my wife says adding it was a game changer for her as a ride along passenger. She likes it.
  • The storage compartment is very nice to have.
  • Overall it is nicer to have it versus having none.
