A local thrift store has a 66 289 block, with crank on an engine stand, 2 vintage finned holley aluminum valve covers, a 351w crank and 3 harmonic balancers, 351 timing cover and are asking $300 obo. I dont really need the 351 stuff but was thinking they might let me get the block and valve covers. I haven't had a chance to measure the bore yet. Assuming its standard bore, what might it be worth?

Depends.
Usually when you need one, you cant find one. I found a 67 C5AE block for $50.00.
It was a gamble if it could be rebuilt. It was stock and had never been bored over. So, I rebuilt it.
At the time I could not find a 66 block for my 66 Ranchero. I would have paid a few bucks for one back then.

Whats the casting number and casting date code on the block? In 1966 Ford produced 289 blocks at two different foundries:

C5AE-6015-E Windsor foundry
C6AE-6016-C Cleveland foundry

They have very minor differences and are essentially interchangable (same value). I ask only for the trivia value.

Thanks
Paul

I sold a 302 block on eBay for $150 before. The guy wanted to date match it to his mustang. He paid the shipping, which was another $50

You can't get much for a 289 block/heads. I'd think $50 - $150 for a standard bore, average ordinary block. A Mexican block will bring a few hundred more.

Nice 65/66 Cleveland standard bore 289 blocks do sell for notably more than I've seen the estimates on this thread.

302 Mexican blocks sell for a NICE premium on standard bore:

302 Mexican main caps alone average around $300 here are just a few sold examples:

Why? The Mex 302 blocks are higher quality than 289 blocks and price clearly reflects. I weighed a cleaned 289 on standard bore without caps at 118lbs and 302 Mexican block on standard bore cleaned without caps at 123 lbs. The Mex blocks also take bigger bores than 289's and generally have much nicer cooling chambers with considerably less rot. Ask guys that drag and road race if they prefer the 302 Mexican over 289 blocks if you don't believe me...

It just depends. Some people think their parts are gold, like in the post above (where they're asking a lot) and here:
1965 1966 1967 Ford 289 Engine C5AE-6015E - $495
Those three blocks above I posted SOLD.

Others price it fair:
1965 Ford 289 - $75

Granted, in these examples one is a complete motor, but still overpriced in my opinion.
Keep in mind that block may be 30/40 overbore needing to go further to clean-up the cylinders in which case its lifespan is near the end.

Of course, a measured, cleaned, and magnafluxed block can bring more, especially with a guarantee. But that doesn't generally happen from individuals.

A used 30 over engine, apart, at a thrift store.

Hmmm, what could be wrong with this?

Here is one for $300 that I would consider before that one:

1966 289 engine

Please note, it is NOT mine, and it has been on CL for 25 days.

At a local auto swap meet, I ran across a guy who had a PAIR of 289 engines, complete, one with a transmission. One was out of a van, one was out of a car. One was a 1967, I do not remember the other. He was asking, IIRC, $200 each. I passed on them, and later in the day, they were still for sale. I really just wanted the pulleys and stuff off the front. He told me I could have EVERYTHING for $100. It turned out he was going to be going right past my house, about 20 miles from the swap meet, and he would DROP THEM OFF for the $100. So, when he was done, he showed up at the house, backed the trailer into the garage, and off loaded the engines.

Both of them were AC and power steering equipped. I stripped off all the brackets, pumps, carbs, timing chain covers, bell housings, etc. I put the engine cores on CL for $50 each. No takers, so after a couple weeks, they went in the truck to the scrap metal yard.

C5AE blocks are the only 6 bolt blocks that are legal for vintage racing in Europe , so "standard" bore used blocks have been seling at a premium here in SoCal. Mexican blocks are usually $250 out here.

I couldn't give away my 289 block here in Brea (10 mins from Anaheim).. I finally traded it in as a core to my engine builder with the heads too!

Appears prices will vary though.

List on eBay for $300 and you gotta hassle to ship the thing to a buyer who's only interest is a date correct block for his car. Maybe a vintage European racer too. Otherwise, here's not much reason to buy a 289 over a later model 5.0 roller block.

I hear you Matt,
I sold a Mexican block Std bore at the Long Beach swap meet for $200 because I got tired of moving it around. that was all anybody would pay and at the end of the day! now I have a '66 and a '71 I need to have go away.
