Vibrating noise when stopped in drive

I'm hoping anyone else has had this noise so I can maybe figure out where to look.

It's a new noise, vibration sound when the car is in drive and I'm either stopped on the brakes or braking. Metal on metal sound.

I had my wife sit in the car with foot on brakes while I looked under the hood, and under the car (as much as I could safely) couldn't figure out where the sound is coming from.

If the car is in park or neutral or driving, no sound. In drive and stopped or braking, noise.

I put the car on jack stands, and looked around, couldn't pinpoint any possible issues. I also tried putting it in drive and on the brakes on jackstands.... no noise.

So I'm at the point where I don't think I can safely pinpoint it. Anyone have any ideas of problem areas I could look at?

I've checked the trans mounts and motor mounts recently and both are tight and in good condition.

It is a power steering, power brakes car.

Oh... and this noise is new, it only started a couple weeks ago.

sorry, i have no idea what this means.

if it grinds while braking your brakes are likely metal to metal. if it makes noise or vibrates slightly when stopped, it might be the exhaust hitting the body.

if it only makes noise when your foot is on the brakes or makes more noise when your foot is on the brakes, then you have power brakes and you have a leak which is most likely in the booster.

Start car, car in PARK, no noise. Doesn't matter if foot on brakes or not.

Put car in neutral, no noise. Doesn't matter if foot on brakes or not.

Foot on brake (while stopped) put car in DRIVE, noise.

Take foot off brake and start moving, no noise.

While coming to a stop (at low speeds), noise.

I'll post a video if that'll help.

Definitely sounds like movement of the engine/transmission on the mounts due to torque is causing interference with something. Fan to shroud? Exhaust to driveshaft? Exhaust to brake cables? Tranny dipstick to firewall?

Grab your flashlight and slide underneath and look at the places where there are tight clearances. Look for evidence of rubbing. Look for stuff that could be vibrating, like tranny cooler lines popped loose from clamps, etc.

DING DING I think we have a winner.

Transmission dipstick was sitting up against the valve cover. I moved it back in place and the noise seems to be gone.

We'll see if it comes back. :p

Bleh... spoke too soon. Noise is back.

I guess I'll keep messing with stuff until I find the issue.

Another possible culprit: passenger side brake line. I can see where it was rubbing on the shroud above the a/c connection the firewall.

I still got my money on Trans mount. I had this issue on my 65 and visually, the mount looked fine. But I replaced it anyway because it was $15 and once I had the old one out and compared the two, it seemed that the old one had collapsed. Just spit ballin here, but given the symptoms, it seemed similar if not the same as my issue.

Got it up on a lift today, transmission wouldn't move no matter how hard I tried. Mount could still probably be replaced honestly - but by the looks of it, my exhaust was touching my transmission pan so maybe that was the noise? It's actually at the exhaust shop now, headers are being altered to steer clear of the transmission pan as well as new cans and side exhaust - who knows maybe the sound will go away. Will report back on my drive home today (or tomorrow if they don't finish) but it is going to the transmission shop next Thursday for some checks.
