I have the same console as in your 70 Mach 1. It looks like the lever you have would be just right in my car, too. Do you know what the Hurst part # is?

ive got a 1984 svo hurst in my 91 gt they are cheap like 20$ off ebay and they are short throw but they dont have stop to prevent over shifting!

I got then both from Summit Racing (http://www.summitracing.com/). Do a search on their site on which transmission you have. Mine is a T-5 from a '94 Mustang GT.

I have the stock shifter base right now with the Mustang Plus shifter. http://home.comcast.net/~grabblue65/Restomod.html

I have a performance base for it but have yet to install it. I have had the performance base shifter for so long now I forgot which one I bought. I know I need to trim the opening in the floor for it to fit and this is why I have yet to install it.
