Wrong Starter but works

I have a 1965 Fastback, with a 289 and a T-10 transmission. Back in 1988 my father and I were going to rebuild the engine but instead he chose to swap the original 289 for one that was already rebuilt. I was given the mustang in 1998. In 2003 I replaced the starter. As it turns out the starter that works is DL3153 at Autozone. It is not the same starter I helped my dad swap out when I was young. It is not even the starter that comes up when looking for a starter on car parts sites. According to AutoZone's website the starter I bought in 2003 is for an automatic transmission. I recently pulled the transmission off to rebuild it. I removed the flywheel to check it out. The flywheel is for a manual transmission. It has 160 teeth and the date code indicates it was made August 1964. Which puts it in line for my mustang. My dad bought the mustang Oct 1964. So why can't I use the correct starter? What am I missing here?

Thanks Everyone. Lots to digest. So if I understand it right after the discontinuation of the 160 tooth flywheels your choices were 164 and157. Manuel transmissions would use the 164 and automatics would use 157. The gap between the engine and flywheel is the same for my original 160 and the 157. So that would require me to use a starter meant for the automatic transmission. Did I get it?
