Cincinati Insurance Companies is the underwriter for our vehicles and home...including my ‘66.

I believe the underwriter for the track car is Auto Owners.

State Farm for home and cars for us. I only have liability on the Mustang understanding that I am self insuring collision. It's worked for 38 years.

I looked into classic car insurance last year given values have gone up, but the exclusions/restrictions do not make sense for me. I rarely go to shows and never parades. I drive my car like a car. If weather is nice I drive it to the office and or the store.

I'm an agent and represent Haggerty

No matter what mileage you chose there's always a disclaimer that will say
"Occasional and use not to be used as regular transportation.

Parades, shows, exhibits are included in occasional use definitions

There's a real Grey area in what is and what's not occasional use or for Parades shows and exhibits.

If you have to drive 1000 miles RT to a show what is that considered in their eyes.

Most if not all policies warrant a locked garage at night when not in use.

We all have to be careful and how we use our cars.

Me?
I'm not more than 500 miles a year on each car. If that at times
I don't go far with them.
I don't do shows any more but when I did they were all within 25 miles of home.

So be careful and if you have to travel far it would be a good idea to have them respond to an email of how they feel about it.

Don't interpret anything in the policy your way.
In in the boat
Yep, I told him exacty what I do with the car:
  • Occasionally drive to work (wow, a 3 mile commute!)
  • Texas Hill Country cruises
  • Drive to Reno for Hot August Nights, taking the long way 'round
  • Drive to California for a show (either American Graffiti or Knotts, depending on past years)

According to the agent, driving that far to a show - even though it is technically "going to a show" - you are not covered, because it is "not a reasonable distance".

I guess I just don't live a reasonable life, gosh darnit!

I am pretty pissed off that they literally use a picture of my car but won't insure me... not the agent's fault, of course. Perfectly nice dude. Just a stupid company.

I do occasionally poke around trying to find someone to custom-write a policy for me (I believe @patrickstapler has one?) but finding an agent is not an easy task.

Anyways, given all the varied confused responses on this thread, you all now see why I felt the need to post this warning. You are likely not as covered as you think you are. Just because their website says "unlimited mileage!" in a nice short snappy phrase, doesn't really mean "unlimited mileage all the time no caveats", it means "unlimited mileage within the framework of driving conditions that your policy is written to be in".
So they can just steal a photo from the web of your property and use it for financial gains? You don't have the rights to get it removed?

I guess that's all we need to know really. If you aint buying what you're selling why should we?

HA HA

I represent them but dont sell classic car policies. Its not worth my time dealing with 3 days of underwriting to make a $25 commission. I send them over direct when they call.

They have a good product, they're expensive for the most part.

where ever you end up you just have to be sure to stay within your state underwriting guidelines and definitions of the policy

OK fair enough BP I guess I misunderstood what represent means.. just being my usual smarty pants. I have hagerty, but didn’t even use them when I got hit back in feb I just fixed it myself. At that time I didn’t even know what a pain a claim was going to turn out to be because I was just out joy riding. Like always. The tone of this thread really gives me an uneasy feeling about having to explain myself like a child.

I thought I might share some information with you guys as we've had a few insurance threads get posted recently. I have seen a lot of people posting that they have a Hagerty policy with unlimited mileage. I would urge you to be VERY CAREFUL about that. Here's why:

I just spoke with a Hagerty rep on the phone about getting a policy for Jane (not the first time; people tend to tell me with complete confidence that you can get unlimited mileage agreed value policies through them and I always get hopeful). When I told him my mileage was 10-12,000 miles a year, he said that they would NOT be able to write me a policy, PERIOD. He also elaborated and said that they start cutting the policies off at around 8,000 miles per year usage and do not insure people who are commonly using their cars more than that. And, if you send in a claim to them (get in a wreck or something) and they do some digging and find that you usually exceed that kind of mileage, he said there is a good possibility that you would not be covered.

So, be careful if you're one of the few in the high mileage club. And yes, Hagerty will NOT insure me, despite the fact that they literally have a picture of MY CAR advertising their valuation tool...
Kelly,
Thank U for that info. I was unaware of that!
Fortunately, my annual mileage never exceeds 2,000 miles a year and rarely exceedes 1,000 miles a year.
I will throughly re-read my policy when I renew it this June. 🙂

I have the same idea as 66coupe289 where my personal cars are all under the same policy. It costs more than the collector policy that I used to have but my need for liability coverage changed when each teenager started driving
---"Yes, Mr. Underwriter, I promise that my 16 year old will never sneak out with my classic car"---

Just keep in mind, it’s not track day insurance. That’s a whole ‘nother animal. It is covered at the track or anywhere in between. Just not on the track. And it isn’t cheap. $80/month if I remember correctly. However that covers the car, engine, and trailer for $55K.

I understand that you’re on your own when you’re on the track, it’s the other stuff you mentioned that I worry about.

I noticed no one mentioned JC Taylor. I've had them since the 80's and have had several claims and they have been awesome, responding to each one. My old 65 K GT convert was side-swiped and the adjuster wanted to use a Taiwan 1/4. Ford still made that side, so I called the company. They put a gentleman on and I explained the devaluation of the car with a repro 1/4. He agreed and told me to buy the Ford 1/4 and he would deal with the adjuster. Turned out to be the owner of the company! I don't have a mileage limitation, mostly use. Sanctioned events are covered and a 15,000 mile Pony Drive is a "sanctioned" event, since we're an MCA club. I go to a lot of events- shows, cruises, C & C's and such and occasional driving. A "normal" Pony Drive runs 4,500 - 7,500 miles every year. I had an accident in the 64 but could not replace the windshield for 2 years. They re-opened the case, paid for the new windshield and settled everything. Someone else might be cheaper but with that kind of service and business practices, I'm not going anywhere!

I am a Hagerty member, but do not use them for insurance yet. This goes against the grain of the thread, but I really like them and trust the company. I think they are a more service oriented insurer, and there has to be a bit of a premium that comes along with that. I would not trust what any agent says I can or can't do with a policy, I would read the policy and go by that. I would not be the least the bit concerned with them making good on a policy, unless I did not have a daily driver and was running an uber route with the car. That is just my perception, but maybe they have me fooled.

I will have to check them out. I know when my build is done I will be putting some miles on it attending events. Heck, thinking about Sturgis Mustang Rally and that is 1,300 miles one way just to get there. By the time I took in some of the even cruises and drove home I would probably rack up 3,000 on single trip.

Just checked out JC Taylor, they are a LITTLE better than some, but are overly restrictive like all of the others. I like that they offer coverage of group events, but what if I want to drive to my other esidence, 550 miles away ? what if I want to drive to another VMF'ers house for coffee or to work on his car ? What if I want to drive to synagogue on a nice, sunny Shabbat morning ? No, no, no, and , no. Seriously, I do not understand the appeal of 'classic' insurance. Why pay a premium price for parade / car show insurance ? I own my Stang because I enjoy it and want to drive it. The 'classic' and specialty companies don't allow for that. What about someone like Kelly & Jane ? I'm sure those two would give the insurance company a stroke ! Back to hunting, I suppose. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears ! LSG
