It has holly carbs and an edelbrock carb. I traded my 03 GT Convertible for this off of Craigslist a few months ago. I am not the biggest gear head, but can do basic stuff. Hoping to learn more with this car. I did a little research, and the conclusion I came to is that they are about the same thing. Yes or no?

Almost...about 293 ci now. 302 had 1/8" more stroke than a 289. 302 .030 over is 306 ci

Yep, its a 293 now. The 289 had a 2.87" stroke compared to the 302's 3.002" stroke. For this reason, an actual 302 block will have slightly longer skirts than the 289 although everything else is interchangeable.

Thanks for the replies, and knowledge. So performance wise they are about the same? I dont care that much, dont plan to drag it. Just a cruiser for me. Here are some more pics;

Overall, its in very good shape. But there are some things I want to do to it. I want a passenger side mirror. The locks fall down when you pull them up, so the car is always locked. There are no rocker panels, but the holes are there when they were. I need a console of some sort for drinks. I would like to put a T-5, as it is auto right now. Needs window handle knobs, and floor mats. Fogs lights would be nice too. All in all, not much. Mechanically this thing is very sound. Just some odds and ends.

The guy bought it for 8k in '08, and put about 8k more in it he said. He has a 16 year old daughter, and wanted something more modern for her. So we traded, plus 1k from me. Mine booked for around 8,500. I think I got a steal.

He Rebuilt the motor and tranny. Converted to 5 lug, put AC in, had it painted, new carpet and headliner. Put bullet rims and tires on. Headers and pipes. Put a 1000w amp and 12" sub in the back in a custom box that looks really nice. Cant see the sub at all, just the front side of the amp that glows blue. Speakers behind the back seats too, and in the kick panels up front. New steering column with tilt, and new dash. Few other things.

Yes performance wise they are about the same. Of course its all relative to all the other components like heads, intake, etc, moreso than actual re-bore allowances.

I used to always get a kick out of the Chevy guys with corporate blocks that were "30 over" or "now its a 355 ci" like that was a substantial addition to their power. In reality .03" is about as thick as 10 pieces of paper stacked up or .015" off each cylinder wall is the same as 5 pcs of paper wrapped inside the cylinder wall. Its not very thick at all and when you are getting to thousandths of an inch, you are really splitting hairs. By the way a human hair is .003 average, same as paper, so your .03 over is the same as 10 human hairs set side to side. :}0

The rebore is really more about cleaning out wear/ ridges and re-establishing a nice cross hatch for the new rings. Not really about adding inches. You should be very happy with that engine. The 289 is actually known as a high rever due to the shorter stroke. I've had a ton of 302/289's and I love the engine.

That is really nice! Nothing looks better than a black car done right. I agree, you stole it. Can't see anything I don't like, except the steering wheel looks a "little" out of place with no other woodgrain. The wheels really set it off, and love the choice in gauges.

Thanks again for the information.

I thought about replacing the steering wheel down the road, for a black one. Because as you said, it does look a little out of place. But for now it will have to do. Got other things more pressing. The locks are really, really annoying. Gotta get that fixed. For a temp fix, I put rubber bands around the lock so it cant go down to lock it. A little Ghetto.

Excellent trade! Very nice ride.

You mentioned he converted to 5 lug. That tells me it was a 6 cylinder originally. You may want to check to see if the rest of the suspension was upgraded as well...

Get a factory service manual as soon as you can. Between that and this site, you will soon become an expert on your car...

Try electrical tape if you can't afford locks yet... looks less ghetti
