Working on a 70 mustang, installed rebuilt power steering pump and all hoses with from OPG, replaced the valve and cylinders with new from CJ's. Put it all together , filled with fluid, bled it for a bit then started the car. turned the steering wheel just a bit and the damn wheel turned to the left so fast it caught my hand in it. Hit the stop and the pump started whining like it was over pressuring. Shut car off and for a couple seconds the wheel was real hard to turn then loosened up. Turned it back and forth a couple more times to check for binding, no problems. Started it back up and same thing, wheel spun by itself to the left and pump started whining. Im thinking something is jammed up in the valve forcing oil to one side of the cylinder. Any ideas ? Gonna call CJ's first thing in the AM....

My steering cylinder had apparently been rebuilt by someone that didn't know what they were doing. Mine acted the same way. Dan at Chockostang fixed it and overhauled the control valve while he was at it. Per Dan there are washers inside the the control valve that restrict fluid pressure. Mine were sideways in their bores inside the control valve and therefore allowing full pump pressure through the valve to the ram. The steering was OK until you started to turn the steering wheel and then the wheel would spin right out of your hands. Good luck. That steering is just plain dangerous in that condition. Dave R.

Not the large one from the pump but the 2 small ones from the control valve to the ram.
Gotcha, thought of that as well but in my mind the problem im having seems to be mainline pressure going right to the cylinder. I started to switch the lines from valve to cylinder around to see if it went the other way but got ticked off and quit for the nite...

"New" from the far east. I had the same situation on my 67 30 years ago and it was the control valve, about broke my wrist. Hopefully CJ's will make it right. If not, Dan, "Chockostang", can rebuild your original to like new condition. He does great work! Classic Mustang Disc Brake Conversions and Power Steering

This is actually the second one from CJ's, the first one the threads where it screws onto the center link did not go all the way to the bottom and almost destroyed an impossible to replace centerlink. along with the attitude I got from CJ's customer service...I can only imagine how the phone call tomorrow morning is going to go..... bad thing is the original valve got partially destroyed coming out, was so frozen into the pitman arm when I put a fork in to seperate it ripped that stud out of the valve...

ouch, not a good idea using a fork.
If you can post pictures we can help if the hoses are correct or not. But it sounds like control valve...
As said before, Dan is the guy. I completely rebuild my PS a few months ago. Dan was super helpful with all questions. Now the PS runs great and no leakage at all.

I hope you can find a good solution with CJ. Best thing would be to get your money back and spend it at Dan's shop :)

Using a fork was the last option, I beat on that thing for an hour and wouldnt break loose .... :frown2:

I'm gonna call CJ when they open, I already got into it with one of the guys there over the first one having issues.... hopefully they do the right thing....

My suggestion assuming you still have your cores is to return everything to CJ, get your money back and send your cores and anything you plan to reuse (hoses etc) to Chockostang. Let him do it right and you will be golden likely for the rest of your car's life. These things are very reliable but non-trivial to set up.

Good Luck,

M
