I just saw this on a "speed show" They put a TXK in a 67 cougar using an aftermarket kit. The kit's solution to not having to notch the floor support was a lower mounting crossmember (increasing transmission angle) and to have the trans right up against said tunnel support. I am beyond horrified.

I finally got to take the car for a first drive with the new TKX.

WOW!

The TKX is WAY better in every way than the GF T5. Quiet. The shifter feel is money. Tight. Precise.

Loving it!

I've always wondered how all of these aftermarket transmission companies can make a T5 withstand 500 hp, or even sometimes a bit more, yet here it is 2022 and Tremec for some reason can't upgrade their T5z to withstand the same amount of horsepower? Seems a bit odd as I'd think they'd have a lot more interest from people if it was literally just a bolt on/direct replacement swap and not everyone has the tool/machinery or knowledge of being able to relocated the transmission tunnel floor support.

What did you end up doing - notching the floor support?

I'm glad you got a chance to stretch its legs between paving projects!

Don't forget to check your trans. & pinion angles when you're done or adjust as you go. A degree or two makes a big difference in u-joint wear and vibration. Best of luck, but solid engineering is better.
Doesn’t a degree or two only matter if you’re already near the extreme?

Not from my recent experience and my studying up on the subject. It's about having same or very similar RPMs at front u-joint and the rear u-joint. Different RPMs at these locations cause vibration. The RPMs at the respective u-joints are affected by their individual angles. It is also about having equal but opposite angles at each end of your D/S. Actually, you want a minimum of a 1 deg. difference to facilitate lubrication of the bearings per the D/S experts. That's why moving the floor reinforcement is important. It allows for an improved angle at the trans tail shaft. I was not willing to move mine in a T-5 swap. I had a 3.5* down angle but was able to shim to 3*. However, at the pinon, I had a 2* down angle. After some test driving and study, I found two downward angles don't make it right. Quite noticeable vibration cruising above 50 mph.

I decided to use steel (aluminum wear & break) angle shims under spring perches to adjust the pinon angle to 2* upwards. By the way, in very hard acceleration a downward angle is desired to anticipate the upward rotation of the pinion under load. I will manage the pinion rotation on hard acceleration with underride links. Now I can cruise at any "relatively sane" speed without vibration. The seat of the pants smoothness was quite noticeable.

@hotrodfords I moved the tunnel support back.

Thanks all. Took it for another drive today and still loving it!

@disquek Saw your posts on the TKX in a couple threads. Didn't want to necro them so I'll hop into this one...
I have a TKX installed into a 64.5, replacing a TKO600, which means my floor was already heavily modded (rebuilt). Major difference in shift quality between the two!

I have a question for you... Have you noticed any noise? I have a rattle/jingle kind of noise coming from the transmission that didn't exist with the TKO, and have been trying to troubleshoot that for a while with MDL's help. MDL suggested I open a case with Tremec and their tech folks told me to send it to them without a single question. It looks like I am yanking it, boxing it and shipping it to Tremec.

Is there a lot more room on the tko vs tkx? My tko is a streamlined case unit so it has more room than the standard unit.

A streamlined case TKO is still much larger than a TKX. This is a standard TKO next to a TKX.

Yes, a considerable amount of room gained. The main reason you get so much room back is that the TKO has the covers on top and squared off corners. It fits the tunnel shape MUCH better.

Thanks guys. My tko is ok but for the price I paid it really was a piece of crap.

Mine leaked brand new out of the box from the bearing retainer (common problem). The shifts aren't great and they have the high rpm shift lock out (common problem), mine whines a little on decel in lower gear (common problem). They're overly bulky and cases crack on them too. For years and years that I was on here other than the shifting at high rpm problem I never heard anything negative about TKOs until I bought one.

Have you noticed any noise?
The only noise I have (and I'm not sure if it's the gearbag or the diff - I hear it out the window) is a slight whine on decel.

I've only driven it three times with the TKX. I noticed it the first two drives. I forgot about it on the last one.

No rattles or other noises. I'm sure you have checked this, but look at the shifter. The other things that I've had rattle often in that area is the parking brake cables/ends/pieces on the exhaust.
