My trunk lid on my 71 Mach1 with spoiler will nit stay open.
I looked and it is on the 3rd notch already.
The only time I would like it to stay open is at the Charity car shows.
Is there a way to keep open without replacing the torsion bars?
From what I have seen it is not an easy task.

If you want the simplistic way, you could get a broomstick to prop it and call it a day. But, you could do a switch to hydraulic struts like this. I am unsure of any other options you would have on this, but other people here probably have experience here. Good luck!

 

I don't think my 70 is fancy enough for the Lacrosse trunk holder, toilet plunger maybe! 😂

 

The torsion rods are side specific and if they've been swapped they won't stay open.

 

check to make sure they are installed correctly .
if they go in easy They are wrong . install should be a P.I.T.A. even with the home made tool .

do 71s have the prop rod like 69/70s?

 

I had the same question. My '70 Mach 1 has a rear spoiler and there's no way it will stay open without the prop rod.

 

Same thing with the 69. It needs the prop rod... or a 2x4!

 

Changing the torsion rods isn't hard. You will have to use some touch up paint after though. There is a good YouTube video on a 1966 I believe

 

I believe it is factory. It is heavy. I will jus prop it up for now.
I think my rods are just old.

I did our foam-filled ABS wings that way on purpose. Super light weight, but looks 100% legit, doesn't warp, etc etc... And no, Ford never used prop rods 71-73.

I have one and love it. Great quality and looks just like the originals, minus the sag in the middle.

 

Posted this years ago. The hand trunk spring tool I made from pic in 67 Ford shop manual. Yes side specific, at least on 65-68 coupe and conv.

 

71-73 sportsroofs had a thicker set of torsion rods installed when the car was ordered with a spoiler.

 

The person I bought it from going on 5 yrs didn’t change out the rods. I have a feeling they may have never been changed. The used to stay open unless a high wind was blowing in the right direction. Now the trunk will shut if car is bumped or light wind will blow it shut. Prop rod time.

 

Is this spoiler you speak of something that would/could have been added to the car? I'm betting there were two different sets of torsion rods depending on spoiler or no spoiler. Can anyone confirm?

Rear spoiler will be on the Marti Report if it was factory installed.

I figured out a simple solution to my trunk lid not staying open. Just took a piece of wire and a pliers.
I have attached a picture. I will make it look better and maybe make one for the other side.
