Why do we like to go fast?

Is it because it is against the law and thus challenging authority?
Is it because it is exciting and challenges our senses?
Is it because of testosterone and can't be helped?
Is it because of competition?
Is it because of one's desire to get as far away from idiots and incompetents?
Is it because we are in a hurry?

I'm asking in a serious manner. While I don't speed excessively, I do drive agressively but controllably...at or slightly above the speed limit, but without taking unncessary risks. Why? I'm a Type A personality, and am usually in a hurry and hate slow-pokes. However, when driving across country, my driving habits are more reasonable. I settle down to a speed slightly less than "the pack", trying to avoid getting stuck into one. I don't like to be surrounded by cars where I have no chance for escape should a problem arise.

Your thoughts on why we speed?

Good question Mid, I am the exact same as you (in regardes to speeding, NOT SHEEP) and I have often wondered the same. I know when I was young I lost my DL 3 times and after paying high insurance for a long time I realized it wasn't worth saving 5-10 min in driving time. People THINK they are in a hurry or need to be and just don't relax anymore. I always get very upset when I see little ones in car seats and their parents drive like they are nuts. I wish the police officers would pull them over and double ticket them (In WI there is a "precious cargo" citation the could use) and then post their names in the paper so others now how well the children are respected by their parents.

SLOW DOWN!!!

We learned everything we needed to know by Kindergarden.

At a young age I learned that being first in line gives you pick of whatever it is the line is formed to get.

At a young age I learned that if I was nice and allowed people to slide in front of me, they either took the last of the item I wanted, or walked so darn slow that 20 more people slid in line in front of them.

At a young age I learned that if I managed to get through the line faster, I could eat/do my homework/whatever and then have more free time left at the end to do something I was more interested in doing like what TV, sleep, play video cames, etc.

Translate that into adulthood,

While driving, as long as you are passing people, if traffic slows down suddenly you will be further up in the line.

While in a line, if you ferociously protect the area between you and the next person in line, you won't have to worry about dropping back in the line.

While driving to a destination if you get there faster you will have more time to do something you like...if you are going to work, you will be able to leave earlier, if you are going home, you will be eating dinner sooner...etc...

All of this is of course subconscience for most people since they, like I, learned it at such a young age and it becomes a behavior hard to get rid of.

Take for instance me, when I am driving in my Mustang to my brothers house it takes well over an hour. This is a pleasure cruise for me since I love driving the mustang, yet I still drive at 75+ MPH and never let anyone cut me off...even though I am not really in a hurry (at least consciensely)

A fun question, it will be interesting to read the responses.

When I first started driving it was the thrill of doing something new and dangerous.

That evolved into competition/pride. Could my ride keep up with (well that's not really true - could my ride *BEAT*) somebody else's ride (particularly if I did not like them).

Eventually that changed into just the thrill of going fast. The landscape flying by, heart rate up, senses on full volume, etc.

Now it is more that, I just appreciate what the machine can do (or I'm just in a hurry). I would like to be able to get to a track just to find out what the car is capable of; but time, money and other priorities always seem to get in the way. At some point I would like to turn in a 100+ mph quarter just because I think it sounds cool.

I normally drive at the speed of the average car (meaning some people pass me, and I pass others). But like you I like to stay out of situations where I'm boxed in if I can avoid it. (Commuting in thick traffic doesn't give one many options!)

I've learned that I'm mortal and that I could die pretty easily in my convertible. So I really don't drive it all that fast as a matter of course. But I will do a solo speed burst now and then when space and lack of police allows.

Its easier to maneuver in traffic when your going faster than everyone else, because you know people wont sneek up while you try and change lanes.

That only applies about 1%-50% of driving (depending on where you live). I guess the rest is just liking the sensations that man just cant do without machinery. (Maybe that is why i like tools so much? :: )

It's funny, when I'm in the pony I tend to get on it when there is no one around. In my truck Steph says I drive like I dont care when I get there. Even when we take the Vert, like to the coast for the MITM I maintain except when I'm around Johnpro, he makes the devil come out in me .

Now when I was young, I did stupid things. I think I grew up last year

Because my take-out pizza will get cold, if I don't.

I mirror your reason why Midlife. I love the comp and feeling of power under my butt. I like to drag to the next stoplight, yet crosscountry, I keep it under 90. I don't like cars around me cause you never know what skills are in the other car.

Can I now please be released from the curse!!! :wall:

Adrenaline, speed junky-i-tis. It's the thrill of speed and being on the edge. It's a rush to cheat the Grim Reaper, could be Sky Diving, Bungee jumping, fast cars, 4 wheelers or a tri cycle...it's all GOOOOOOOOD
Of course, as I've aged I pick and choose when and where to achieve this rush....Responsibility Sucks.
I can't wait till the track car is ready :: ::

I like racing and going fast but it has to be on the track because it can be costly and there's too much frustration to take that kind of determination to the public roads. However, when I am cruising the roads I like to go my own pace, and when I come upon someone who's going too slow, looking for something, or hanging in the left lane unneccessarily and blocking the flow, I have a tendency to pressure them a bit, or so says SWMBO..
I really don' think so.

Yes to all of the above. "I'm in a hurry and don't know why", as the song goes. I like to go fast simply and puely because I can.
