Hello,

I have a 67 GTA Coupe that needs a new roof. There are no roof options other than a donor car. I'll probably end up with a roof from an already too far gone junker, but I may end up having to buy a cheap 'craigslist' Mustang and cut the roof off then part it out or junk it.

I have some pangs of guilt on the latter option, which brings the question. Would you make another Mustang sacrifice its life for yours?

Kevin

I would feel guilty about it- so I would try to make it "save" as many others as possible. Kinda like organ donation I guess- or make a convertible bonus car......that might be cool,

You know I saw a mustang smoker/grill on craigslist now that you mention it- I thought it was a horrible waste- but .........

Yes. If it came to that.
Any good yard should be able to sell you a whole 67/68 coupe roof section.
The local place by my house sells them for $650.......none in stock right this
moment though.

Wouldn't dare trash one that's saveable, but if everything below the beltline is shot, I'd do it.
Of course if I were hacking the roof off of my coupe I'd probably go ahead with a fastback conversion, just me though :pirate:

Almost Mustang. Had a 70 Torino GT vert I bought from original (Wisconsin) owner in 1975. Found an Alabama 70 M code shaker Torino vert in 84. By 87 the Wisconsin Torino was collapsing from rust. Removed all the good stuff including top assembly, engine and tranny. The rusted hulk went to the crusher. Gave the 302 and C4 to a friend...he got another 100,000 out of the 302 and C4.

Still have the spare top frame with my other spare parts.

No! Would you trash your grandparents if they got to old and rusty?
Easy to say living in Tennessee! Here in the rust belt we're talking collapsing hulk!

Yep. In a heartbeat if the price was right or there wasn't another option.

I'd rip it apart, take what I needed and scrap the rest if I couldn't find a buyer for the remains.

Yep, happening in the coming weeks in fact. I have absolutely no problem ripping apart another car to put mine back together. Mine is important to me sentimentally; a shell is not.

If I had the option of using just a few repro parts or junkyard parts I'd do that first though. I just don't in this circumstance.

Hmmm… Around here, a 65-66 fastback clean enough to be any use to you would be considered a prime candidate for restoration. A parts fastback would be far too rotten for you.

Here's one that suffered, from corrosion, damage far worse than yours. All of the repairs were completed with new reproduction parts.

Surely so. The donor car is a Flintstones-floored shell with rusty lower quarters, fenders, and cowl. It'll need to be sectioned in and then the lower quarters will need to be done (again). Chas was going to restore it but it is now going to me. Definitely won't be a easy stitch though as it does need work. Trunk and frame and the area on top of the quarters leading into the roof is clean though and that's what I need.

My personnal burden to bear:

Many moons ago, I saw a REALLY neat roll bar set up in a Mustang in a junk yard. Looked hard to get out, so the yard man just fired up the torch and cut off the roof, busted the rear glass, etc. Tossed the roof on the ground. Those stripes on the fastback roof still looked good. I probably should have taken the fenders, but I did not like that GT350 stripe look. :(

Shelbys, K codes, S codes, MAch's, Cobra Jets, Boss 302 and 429 all have had their day as common junk in the yards. There was no shame then, so don't feel bad about toasting some plain Jane 67 68 coupe.

The fact that you need a roof says your saving a car that many would scrap.

Sadly, there are STILL a lot of cars that are worth FAR MORE apart than together.
