My wife found what appears to be a 1969 mustang in a local farmers field. Would love to make an offer on it but I need to know more. I thought it might be a Mach 1 initially but after looking at it I have my doubts. The odd part is the roof. It's a vinyl top from the door windows back. Has a small round window on both sides behind the doors and a sunroof. I can not find any information on any of this. Model, trim level, or anything else. The only badges on it day only "mustang". It does have a hood scoop, but appears to be a part of the hood. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds very strange. Some fastbacks did have vinyl tops. The round windows however?? My guess is it’s a coupe with “custom” round windows like a old thunderbird. Pics for sure!!

Thank you, that's what my inner voice was telling me but I honestly had no idea. You aren't the first to have mentioned this so I think you're on the right track. Now I need to find out what this might be worth in its current condition.

It's been customized. That's called a Landau top. The oval windows and the sunroof have been added. It was a somewhat popular 70's customization. The car is a coupe Mustang. I had a friend in the 1980's with a mid 70's Camaro that had a Landau top with the oval windows.

Thank you, this was my fear from when I first saw it. But maybe I can get for a better price because of this. We definitely would want to restore it to factory condition.

laying in an open field 6 inches deep in earth.
unless your good at welding and metal work i can almost guarantee that undercarriage and all associated parts are shot.
proceed with caution

Absolutely, I haven't gotten to look at much other than the outside so far. I would expect it needs lots of work, but I'm prepared for that if I can get it for the right price. Unless the underside is completely ruined that is. I have no idea if it even has an engine or a transmission in it anymore yet. But one has to start somewhere.

That's true, but everything is for sale in my world. Given the right price anyone will sell their own grandmother. So it just depends on what they say. I haven't gotten in touch with them yet. I wanted to know more so I could make an informed decision and make an offer on the spot if need be.

Pass side window cracked open isnt helping anything either in the rot department

I wouldn't buy it to restore it but I'd look into it as a parts car. I can't tell from the pics but if it has a deluxe interior its worth a bunch, if not it's still worth a bunch in parts.

It's got parts at least. By the look of the distance between the fender and tire it has a motor as well. They're always worth a look and an ask.

Poor little coupe got ALL butchered up 😔 and this is coming from a 70 coupe guy.

Imagine the rot after peeling back that high quality vinyl 🤢 and an aftermarket hacked sunroof? 🤮 I'm sure that hasn't been leaking for 30 years (sarcasm font 😉)

You just beat me to it...I was going to say, "Isn't anyone going to even mention the aftermarket sunroof?" :)

I'd give him a couple hunny, grab the headlight buckets and grille..... give my 70 a 69 twin headlight face. Give away (literally) the rest 🤷‍♂️ hell, I'd pay extra to pull those parts and leave the rest of it there 😆

Waiting for this to be a 6 cyl on top of it!

I actually wouldn't be surprised if it had a V-8 in it. Hood scoop is one clue. Those are some meaty tires so someone cared enough to put those on. Also could you get the Grande with the Six? I would think if you were stepping up to the Grande you'd have to get a V-8?

Ranger, there WERE Mustangs sold in Mexico, Shelbys even, but you are looking at a 69 Grande with some 70s custom work. Still might be nice. You don't know if you don't look, and ask. I'd say go for it. LSG

Polls taken on this website consistently show that the '69 Coupe is one of the least desirable Vintage Mustangs. On the other hand the '69 Mach 1 is consistently the most desirable Vintage Mustang.
If you can buy that car for $100 you can make some money selling parts. Do not buy it intending to restore it. Every dollar you spend on it will put you farther into the hole.

The guy probably got the landau kit, opera windows and sunroof from a place with the initials JC in front of it. When I was a teenager, I bought a VW Rabbit ( actually a Caribe from Mexico) that I put that exact sunroof in- it leaked bad when new and worse the longer I had it. In my defense, there was a time when these mods were all the rage- in addition to the sunroof the Rabbit had a holley carb, headers, duel exhaust and an Alpine stereo- I was hot stuff (sigh)

It is a PARTS CAR unless it has a 429 Factory engine.

The top has to come off, and most likely the underside has to come off.

Automatic trans lowers the low desirability of the car.

PLEASE listen to people on this site who LIKE Mustangs and they say: NOT WORTH IT. If you want to save a 1969 coupe, find one that is worth saving, not a parts car.

Whatever you spend, every dollar increases the value of that car by 25 cents.

Sorry, it is a hard fact about THAT year and model.

1969 1970 parts are, as a rule, much higher in price than 65 66 or 67 68, and there are fewer of them made, so original parts or NOS have to be found.

Get a few pictures with the hood up, and the doors open, and better comments can be made, and it would be nice to see the last time it was driven, and why it stopped.

The part about the 70s parts being more expensive and harder to find I can vouch for. A lot of parts were 69 specific, same for 70 and don't interchange. Finding one year off parts is a real pain in the backside. I did have to pay premium for NOS parts just to get things that are not reproduced.

Sunroof is probably a Valley brand from the late 70's or early 80's the someone installed

I'm not convinced it's even a Grande. It has the dual sport mirrors, but I'm not sold on the other Grande features.
