62?!

You had to go and say something. High of 62* in the 10 day forecast...

A couple of natural gas shop hanging heaters for sale locally could change that...

That doesn't even warrant fuzzy flip flops up here....

I'm trying to piece together the front brakes. It's pretty obvious that the go to choice is the 12" (11.73") disc. You can buy the following kits:

https://www.streetortrack.com/Street-or-Track-12-Trans-Am-Front-Disk-Brake-Kit-pr-24455.html

100-3000 Competition 12" Front Brake Kit 1965-73 (Specify street or race compound pads)

There is no doubt, that is the easiest route to take (great looking kits as well). I'm going to try and piece mine together and hopefully save a couple of bucks, but we will see.

I'm starting with the 1970 drum brake spindles. The 1970 drum brake spindle has a larger "pin" or shaft than the 65-69. In trying to make this as simple as possible, I want to find a set of 70 drum brake hubs but it is my understanding that the hubs are the same 65-70. I know Shaun sells the hubs new as well Drum brake hub for 1965-73 Mustang You will need studs as well.

You have to make sure you get the correct bearing and race for the 1970 drum brake spindle. The bearings are A12 outer and A13 inner (per a discussion with Dan - Chockostang). https://www.napaonline.com/en/search?text=front%2Bwheel%2Bbearings&referer=herofitmentForm-newveh LM12749/LM12710 (outer) and L68149/L68110 (inner) are Timken Bearings and Races.

Then comes the calipers. It my understanding that you want to use the 69 Lincoln calipers. The following are calipers listed on Rock Auto:
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/lincoln,1969,continental,7.5l+460cid+v8,1187704,brake+&+wheel+hub,caliper,1704

The mounting bracket for the rotors. Mustang caliper mounting brackets I'm not sure if Shaun sells his bracket separately or not (I couldn't find it).

Then the rotors. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford,1968,thunderbird,6.4l+390cid+v8,1139789,brake+&+wheel+hub,rotor,1896

Odds and ends that will be needed are spindle nuts, braided brake lines, seals, dust caps, brake pads, etc. Note that the SoT kit includes all of this, the CA kit does not include the spindles and hub assemblies.

It's important to understand that this has NOT been verified by me as of this posting. This is just knowledge learned to this point and some of the parts MAY not be correct. It is my intent to verify the parts needed so I can make a specific list of what is needed. Or, of course, you can use one of the fine kits listed above and know you have the correct parts.

I'm at $1,000 plus (this is somewhat dependent on what you pay for spindles) already without Pads (big ticket for good ones) and the other items I listed above as odds and ends. I will try and put prices on all the items needed though in my final write up

If anyone sees anything they know to be incorrect, please feel free to correct me. This is intended to be a learning experience.

More to come,

Allen

Go fast axles came in today. These are 35 spline going into the '65 9" small bearing rear end I have. Some say the small bearing on a 35 spline axle is asking for trouble with the bearing. We'll find out. These bearing are sealed. Also, the gentleman that I talked to at Quick Performance (QP) told me that the seals are not needed (but can be used if I want to use them), but that the o'ring on the bearing should seal. Interesting idea on the bearing as I have not seen it before. QP was very easy to work with and the axles got here quicker than I had anticipated.

Now I need backing plates for the larger rear brakes, the complete drum brake kit @Opentracker sure looks nice...

I just put the T/A front brakes on my 68 Coupe. Here's my parts list:

1968 Thunderbird rotors (Raybestos 6008R)
1967 Thunderbird calipers (drilled out threaded mounting holes and machined down rib) A-1 CARDONE 184403/184402 or CENTRIC 14261001/14261002
1967 Mustang Disc Brake Hubs w/ stock length studs (longer studs available from ARP, but you will need open ended lug nuts)
1970 Mustang Wheel bearings and races (Timken set 12 & 13)
1970 Mustang Inner Hub Seal (Timken 6815)
1970 Mustang Spindles for Drum Brakes D0OA-3107-F, D0OA-3108-F
1970 Mustang Outer Tie Rod End (Moog ES387R)
1970 Mustang Replacement Spindle Nut Kit (Dorman 04994)
1970 Mustang Replacement Hub Cap (Dorman 618101)
Braided Stainless Steel Hoses from S or T
Caliper Brackets from Cobra Automotive 100-212

You will need wheels that are at least 15" and have ~ 1/2"+ offset from the wheel hub face to the back side of the spokes because the front face of the caliper sticks out past the disc brake hub. AR TTD's fit and V45's do too. Magnum 500's (15x7") fit diameter wise, but do not fit due to the caliper sticking out past the hub.

Other years and models may cross reference and work, but this is what I used.
I'm doing some searching and reading and found this from another thread this year. Again, not vouching for the parts until I get them, just compiling the information. Part numbers in red I've added. Thanks to @merlin51.

Also note that some of the years/models listed cross over many years/models. For example, the calipers can come from or fit the following:

FORD COUNTRY SEDAN 1965-1968
FORD COUNTRY SQUIRE 1965-1967
FORD CUSTOM 1965-1967
FORD GALAXIE 1965-1967
FORD LTD 1965-1967
FORD RANCH WAGON 1965-1967
FORD THUNDERBIRD 1965-1967
LINCOLN CONTINENTAL 1965-1969
MERCURY BROUGHAM 1967
MERCURY COLONY PARK 1966-1967
MERCURY COMMUTER 1966-1967
MERCURY MARAUDER 1966-1967
MERCURY MARQUIS 1967
MERCURY MONTCLAIR 1965-1967
MERCURY MONTEREY 1965-1967
MERCURY PARK LANE 1965-1967

Rotors are the same way:

FORD COUNTRY SEDAN 1968
FORD COUNTRY SQUIRE 1968
FORD CUSTOM 1968
FORD GALAXIE 1968
FORD LTD 1968
FORD THUNDERBIRD 1968
LINCOLN MARK III 1968-1969
MERCURY COMMUTER 1968
MERCURY MONTCLAIR 1968
MERCURY MONTEREY 1968

These are the cross references that Rock Auto gives.

So, I've been looking ahead and I have compiled a few questions that maybe some of you can help me with. I've done a search, and yes, some of them have been asked before, but thought maybe a compilation here will do some good. Feel free to respond to the following:

1. What's the largest wheels and tires I can run on my Mustang?
2. My engine has a tapping noise, what is it?
3. What oil should I use?
4. What carburetor?
5. My cars running hot, what radiator is it going to take to fix it?
6. Should I do the Shelby/Arning drop?
7. I have a 1978 block in my 66 Mustang, is it the original engine?
8. What's my paint job going to cost?
9. What steering wheel should I use?

and wait for it,

10. Straight or curved monte carlo bar?

Feel free to answer or add any questions to my list...>:):grin2::shrug::pirate::yoho:

All these are asked and answered a few times a day on the Facebook page. Let's not forget, what's my car worth, what color should I paint it, what's the best exhaust, what's the best brakes, etc...

You been drinking? >:)

Allen, I realize you’re last post was partially tongue in cheek, but crimany, these constant new threads about the same dam questions has really gotten old. Instead of coddling people, why not point out that the information they seek is already here...tenfold.

Full stop. Don’t want this thread to get locked.

Or do I?
