trying to decide between magnaflow or dynomax super turbo for my 65 mustang (289) coupe.

majority rules...looking for good muscle car sound.

I've used the Dynomax before and they do sound nice. Price is probably a little cheaper than the Magnaflow, which are made in stainless. Magnaflows are also a little loud for my taste. One issue with a stainless exhaust is if the welds are not done with a shielding gas on both the inside and outside of the pipe, they will probably fail.

A little more expensive, but you are paying for some quality, and worth it. Best aftermarket exhaust I've used, better quality than FlowMaster & DynoMax, not too loud like Borla. But loud enough when you really get on it. I put them on a K code and a couple of Shelbys. I prefer the 2.5" size. Big enough to handle modifications, small enough to fit easily.

It would probably help if you guys would list the model number of the mufflers you are using. As I previously mentioned in my post, I am using the Magnaflow XL-3. They are not loud at all, even at WOT and there is zero drone. I'm sure there are many Magnaflows and Dynomax that are extremely loud and have serious drone, but broad strokes like Magnaflows or Dynomax are too loud and have too much drone doesnt really help someone make an informed decision.

I've got super turbos on mine. 351w (stock cam... for now), with headman long tubes to a 3" collector, down to 2 1/2" with H-pipe, dumping in front of the axles.

My 0.02... defines the muscle car tone.

I am surprised by how many people are running X-pipes rather than H-pipes. My understanding is that X-Pipes work best for high revving engines like the 4.6L and the H-Pipe is better for lower reving higher torque motors like the Windsor motors.

Noobie question here; what would one expect to pay for all new pipes, mufflers and installation? Magnaflow is what I'm putting on, going from single on my 66 289 A code to duals.

I'm finally doing a major overhaul (suspension, intake, transmission, power, brakes) and going to redo the exhaust and I have a quote from a real good shop for $1k. Seems high, but in my experience you get what you pay for.

Thanks for any input

I have the super turbos and I am really happy with them. I am running a 331 stroker, 2.5" stainless system with an x-pipe and resonators right before the tips. Really quiet and docile at idle and in traffic. Almost sounds like a stock 289, then surprises the crap out of you when you get in the gas. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Here is a crappy quality video of my car at idle. Gives you an idea anyways.

I've had both and I like the magnaflow better. Sounds great when you stomp on it and they are probably less restrictive with the straight through design. I used two 2.5" magnaflows. As I recall, the 2.25" and 2.5" magnaflows are the same internally (2.5") just the pipes on the ends are different size. So if the muffler guy uses 2.25" and cuts the pipes off and installs a 2.5" exhaust, your still getting a 2.5" exhaust.

The Dynomax have straight thru exhaust too (ultra's).
Exhaust sound is pretty much individual tastes, not everyone will agree on the same systems, as you can see here. Go to a car show and find cars with small block Fords and ask what they are running, they'd probably be more than happy to start them up for you. The good thing is, mufflers are not overly expensive and easy to replace, if you ever decide your not happy with your choice. I found the Dyno's for less than $60 a piece.
