There have been discussions on what is covered with your classic car insurance. It’s been stated that if it’s not in writing you can’t necessarily believe that it’s true. So I just renewed my Hagerty insurance. And this statement was included in the paperwork I received.

So I guess drive your car for the fun of it!

Dont want to start anything political , but have they asked you to pay them to plant trees yet?

I dropped them when they started talking about carbon offsets
Preaching to the wrong choir. I’m all for doing positive things to help with our climate issues.

"for the fun of it."
still does not include backup transportation, to and from work or running errands

although some members said they had permission to take it to work if they were going to a show later that day or had an appt with a shop

i still wouldn't trust it

From Hagerty's website:

Flexible usage
Insuring a car through Hagerty allows occasional pleasure use.** You can go for a weekend drive, take your vehicle up to the local ice cream shop or attend unlimited events and cruises.

** Occasional pleasure use does not mean use for daily driving to and from work or school, routine shopping, etc.

Its all on how you describe to them what you were doing.... ;)

On my way to the car show, I stopped by the grocery store to get a soda and got hit in the parking lot

I personally hate all insurances (car, home, medical, life, etc.). They love to take your money every month. At the end of the year do you get any of that money back if you don't make a claim? Hell no! Your money is used to pay for other peoples accidents.

Then if you are one of those people who have an accident what do they do? Give you all kinds of grief if you make a claim and then on top of that they raise your rates.

Bastards, all of them!!!!

That's all well and good, but one MUST read the actual policy and not rely on a marketing letter.

Again, read your policy. Every state has different policy language to comply with state law. Also, bear in mind that Hagerty is NOT the insurer. They are the AGENT. The actual policy issued is underwritten by an insurance company. My current Hagerty Policy is underwritten by Essentia Insurance Company.

I'm not a huge State Farm fan, but I have multiple other policies through them so I decided to ask them to insure my 1968 completely restored/resto-modded Mustang. Believe it or not, they did give me a policy with NO driving restrictions (a "regular" auto insurance policy) with a documented/agreed value of what I think the car is worth (well over 150k). I had a pile of receipts/build records that they examined very closely, but they did grant the policy and have renewed it twice now.

Oh yea - the best part - it is roughly half of the quote I got from Grundy and Hagerty.

Is your policy an "Agreed Value" or "Stated Value" policy. It makes a difference. In both cases, you agree with the company on a value. The difference is when you have a loss.

Lot of hand wringing over the verbiage on Hagerty's policy on here. Very few actual results from attempting to make a claim. I have a policy through Hagerty (underwritten by Essentia) with an agreed upon value of 55k for my 66 fastback. A few summers ago I took it to the golf course to play a round of golf. Somehow a flash hailstorm showed up despite sunny skies and no clouds which caused significant body damage to the car. Filed a claim - adjustor came out and asked what I wanted - I told them I'm taking it to the only Mustang specialist in the area and the cost was around (can't recall exact $ amt) 26k which would include repairing the body damage and a full repaint - fully expecting them to say nope to the repaint. Field adjustor took the quote, sent it to the desk adjustor and it was approved in two days. You won't hear me complain about Hagerty or their coverage.

This!

We've gone round and round on this subject. My take is if Hagerty was denying claims for driving the car outside their parameters, we would hear about it. Hagerty told me specifically I could drive my Mustang to work if I wanted to and it would be covered. My Mustang simply can't be my daily driver. The fact Hagerty has never requested any mileage readings makes this pretty flexible.

Don't trust them? Fine. But if you don't trust Hagerty, there's no reason to trust any insurance for anything. Leave your Mustang parked.

A few things here... first of all I'd be very hesitant about going with a company that was considerably less than all of the others. That would make me assume there is some sort of reduced level of coverage or that getting a claim approved was difficult, and honestly it would make me a bit nervous going with someone like that. I've got Hagerty for my classic cars, one of which I have an agreed upon value I believe for $50k and it's $310 or so a year for the policy. Even if State Farm, which was mentioned above, was say $100 less, it's not like you're saving thousands of dollars every year or anything. With Hagerty, I've got no mileage restrictions and they've never asked me for pictures of the odometer or anything like that. Which makes me believe that you could drive the car to work or wherever a few times a week, as long as you don't use it as a daily driver.

But again, they don't have a mileage restriction and they don't ask for pictures of the odometer, so how they'd prove you were driving the car daily is beyond me. When I was shopping around for classic car insurance, I did get a quote from I believe it was American Modern, which for the exact same policy as Hagerty I think they were around $40-$50 less for the year. But I've got Progressive for my home, boat and DD auto policies, so I get a discount through them if I do insure my classics with Hagerty. Which the multi policy discount through Hagerty actually put everything at less money than it would've been if I went with American Modern and kept everything else the same. I've never had to make a claim with Hagerty, or even Progressive for that matter, so I couldn't say how they are in that regard but other than sometimes being more money, I've heard very few negatives about Hagerty. I believe you do have to have a locked and secured garage, or at least I do, and then you have to have a DD vehicle for anyone that is of driving age. Though neither of those are issues for me, and I wouldn't leave my classics outside and unsecured anyway.

On the topic of claims, I have only had one claim with Haggerty in 15+ years and they were good. Of course I am still out thousands in premiums over that time. A branch fell and broke the windshield on my wives 62 corvette. Called them and told them what I wanted to do and they said no problem and just send us the paid receipts. If you are not familiar with the C1 Corvette windshield they are a nightmare to install in the frame and can easily be broken. I ordered a correct reproduction date coded windshield, had a Corvette restoration shop install the glass in the frame (it was off the car), sent Hagerty the invoices and they paid it fast.

Just FYI: I did the complete body off restoration on that car, and that was the only thing that I paid a shop to do on that corvette :)

Haggerty here with agreed upon value, no driving limitations and mirror deductibles etc. to my every day cars. Used same company when I had my '73 Charger and they were great then as well. Had two claims on that car and zero questions asked when filing/covering.

ALL of the Classic companies are a rip off. They all have too many restrictions and all to frequently try to weasel out of paying anytime they can. I remember when they told me I couldn't drive my car to synagogue on consecutive Shabbats. You know, because the car would be unattended when I was inside. Nevermind that we have armed attendants......

I am REALLY wishing SOMEBODY ( anybody ! ) would start a company and offer insurance for classics that are actually DRIVEN ! I'm retired, If the weather is nice, I could drive everyday. Like , to the bank to cash my Social Security. To the parts store, to another VMF'ers house. But NO, we couldn't have that, now could we !

I am disgusted with ALL of them. LSG

Well I think several people just posted they have classic policies (including me) with no driver limitations...so...🤔🤷‍♂️

It's funny how Hagerty has such a stigma for driving limitations, yet I've never heard or read of anyone having an issue with it a claim over it. Even Hagerty must be aware of this rumor since they included the letter the OP posted saying no limitations. And yet, every one here is still a sceptic lol.

I did when I was younger and living with my parents. They said that each driver in the family had to have a DD vehicle so that you weren't daily driving your classic cars. At the time, my parents were carpooling to work together and so they were fine with us only having 3 daily driver vehicles. The next year when it came to renewal time, they said they wouldn't honor that anymore. I asked them how that works out if a family has 5 kids, does that mean they need to have 7 DD vehicles, plus whatever classic cars they have on top of that?

I called Hagerty when I was laid off during WuFlu and lost my company truck. Told them I may need to drive my car more until I returned to work and all they did was increase my yearly mileage for a small rate increase. Easy peasy.

I was hoping to take my 66 on the Hot Rod Power Tour last year. Didn’t happen. But I did call Hagerty and tell them what I wanted to do and they said that was fine to drive. And this is from Seattle to Atlanta and back. 8000 miles.

This thread inspired me yesterday to go out and drive my 65 to the gas station. Sure I could have driven to a closer one, but I went to one 15 miles away for my pleasure drive!
