So here's my car. It's going to need a new exhaust system in a little while. To compliment the new motor and the vibe of the car I was thinking the Shelby side exhaust in 2.25". What do you guys think? Here's my 66.

Thats a sucker kit. Buy a pair of Cherry bombs and make friends at the muffler shop. The hardest decission will be where to hang from, the pinch weld? Floor pan? Didnt use to matter >:)
I plan to have side dumps but both out the passenger side before I tackle the rear end change.

I personally wouldn't want something so loud as to bother others. That said, I'd much rather hear a really loud growling V8 exhaust than some of the open window bass KA-THUMPING I hear these days. One is loud music to my ears. The other truly annoying noise.

Only if you don't mind looking and sounding like a broke hillbilly. Lol growing up in southwest MO every and I mean EVERY broke *** hillbilly had side exit exhaust and glass packs. Wasn't a fan then and not a fan now.

well my 66 460 powered wagon had 2.5" in side exit in front of the rear tires. it had the no longer made edelbrock rpm race mufflers that were actually straight threw glass packs. when i stomped it people freaked out. it was very loud, i mean abnoxious loud, earsplitting loudenbommer loud. it was so loud people way ahead of me would look in their rear view when i stomped it. i like rear exit exhaust or Thrush aluminum side pipes.

I have a 302 5.0 engine in my '66 and originally I was running the JBA GT350 style side exhaust kit, which is 2.5 inch diameter with 22 inch glass packs. I'm also running an H-pipe near the headers. However, it was really quiet unless I was at WOT. I removed the JBA glass packs and found that they are a louvered design, which doesn't help flow. I installed 18 inch Cherrybomb glass packs and it now sounds just like a classic '60s muscle car should. It's not ratty sounding nor is it excessively loud at cruise. If I roll up the windows I can easily carry on a conversation with my wife.

The '65 gt350's exhaust sounds loud because they ran a 2 inch pipe, which increased the pressure as the exhaust flowed through. You'd think they would've ran a short glass packs but they came with glass packs that were around 25 inches long. After many years though, the fiberglass usually blows out so it becomes louder and rougher sounding.

Here are videos of my new Cherrybomb exhaust.

Not only are they too loud for more than a ten minute drive, they are likely illegal in your state. One of the reasons that Shelby quit using them was because the state DVM's were threatening him with legal action for selling an illegaly equiptedl car. Most states require that the exhaust exit AFTER the rear wheels.

of course you can roll the dice and maybe never have the police stop you and tow your illegal vehicle away, which they have every right to do.

A quick Google search shows a lot of varying regulations. Some shares are enforcing no exit of pipes ahead of the rear wheels (NH), some say no exit before rear of passenger compartment, and some are saying it depends on when the car was made. As usual, no definitive answer.

Positives
They sound incredible
They are not too loud and my ears are quite sensetive

Negatives
They shoot black crap out onto garage floor and wall when starting
They shoot black crap out onto any persons legs who happened to be standing in that area upon starting

We did headers on a 66 GT-350 one time at JBA and to be different,
we sent a single tailpipe out on each side at the quarter panel, like
the twin tips on each side of a '65 GTO.

The customer came back about a week later and we had to quiet
the car down. He had around a 12:1 CR and a Lemans cam. We
had used 2 chamber stainless Flowmasters with a 2.5" system.

We "upgraded" him to regular tailpipes straight out the back and
quieter mufflers. Don't recall which brand.

To be honest I must say that in my 30 years of living in the Seattle area that I've seen maybe a handful of Harley or Harley style motorcycles pulled over by cops and being ticketed. Compared to the dozens and dozens and dozens of crotch rockets that I've seen pulled over. It probably also has a great deal to do with the age of the person riding the bike... most Harley owners I think are a bit more established and responsible/mature, there are always exceptions to the rule of course, compared to the 16 to early 20's year old punk kid that just got his/her license or hasn't had it long and is wreaking havoc on the streets.
