Does anyone know what the Part number is of a Fram Oil Filter for a 1970 351 Windsor?

I did have it written down somewhere but can not remember it for the life of me.

Or better, the Ford Racing FL1A, with the high-quality internals, and extra-thick high-pressure steel case.

Not even expensive, either, $12-$18.

Thanks for that, A PH8A i remember now. But i will try and get the Ford racing one if i can. I am in the United Kingdom. Most motor factors hav`nt even heard of a mustang 351 engine let alone get an oil filter for one.
But if i go in there with a part number when they will have one in stock. Most places in the UK usually stock Fram. My Trans am is a PH25 and everywhere stocks that.

The UK is rubbish when it comes to american classic cars. Our government just want us to all drive 1.4 Litre Euro Boxes and Small cars that will save the planet. So they make it really hard for the few british people that love classic american cars. Thank God for the Internet.
I will run my two american Gas Guzzerling classics and the UK government can just kiss my A*S.

The folks over on the Ford truck site that I frequent are HIGHLY aganst using a Fram filter-someone has done some research and even cut one apart and they are not well made as the name would apply. Ford Truck Enthusiasts, 1948-2011 Ford F150, Super Duty & SUV owners community and information source. Covers F100, F-150, F250, Bronco, Ranger, Explorer, Expedition, Lighting, Escape and More then go to the '99-'03 PSD forum and search for "oil filters" -I'd find a source for the Motorcraft FL1A or get a Purolator one.

I will phone our local ford dealership on monday and see if they can get me a FL1A filter . But i have used a Fram filter in my trans am for years.
Fram are OK if you do an oil change every 6 months. I would not leave it on a car longer than that.

ZRay, Thanks for the link to the oil filter study page!! Interesting to see that they say the Motorcraft is the same as a Purolator Pure One unit-I have been spending a few bucks more for the Pure One for my 7.3 PSD but no more!! I'll but the Motorcraft FL-1995 at WalMart from now on, and will continue to use the Motorcraft on my HP289 as well!!

I also remember a story out a few years ago how Fram shifted production to Mexico & started using cheaper part inside for check valves. As a result many folks complained of a ticking noise in their engines on start up, me included. When heard that I replaced my Fram filter w/Motercraft. NO MORE ticking problems. It was the check valve in the Fram I believe causing oil starving for first few seconds on start up. NO MORE Fram.

I've experienced the startup rattle with a Fram filter too. I find it amazing that no one at Fram seems to have noticed all the writeups about how and why their filters suck. I guess they sell enough to clueless people that they don't care. If the Fram store was next door to me, I'd drive across town to get a Purolator, Wix, or Motorcraft oil filter instead. I try to do right by my cars, which means not using known crappy parts when I have a choice.

I have as well. I use to use them on my wife's 96 Taurus but I would always get valvetrain noise upon startup. Switched to NAPA Gold filters with the anti-drainback valve and have never heard the noise again.

No drain-back valve, cheap filter media, cheap case, filter media glued in place...much better filters for not a whole lot more money. The more expensive Fram filters are better and have better filter media but they also cost $8-$10 where you can get alot of really good filters.

IIRC back in 1957 Ford introduced the screw on disposible oil filter. A kit was availible for previous Y block V8s. Seems to me that original scew on filter was the FL1 or equivalent. IIRC that oil filter has been used on Ford V8's since then, at least through vinatage small block and big block engines. Curious why this filter is hard to find or remember? Why not just put a FL1A on your Ford unless looking for a concours filter?

Motorcraft FL1A is cheaper than a fram at wally world. Cheaper then any other filter actually.

The power of "marketing" at work here. Everyone has heard of Fram because they are a marketing company--we tend to believe what we hear in advertisements. They aren't a very good filter company, but they are an excellent marketing company. After seeing one cut apart next to a Motorcraft and a Wix, I will never buy Fram again.

Every parts store around here carries the FL1-A.

You guys might want to keep in mind that the guy who started this thread is in England. Where I'm pretty there aren't AutoZones and Wal-Marts around every corner.
BTW Daz78, you might want to add your location to your avatar and profile. Doesn't have to be London SW17 or anything, just UK would probably suffice.

Anyone know anything about Baldwin filters? there was one on a 5.4 Econoline that I changed recently and the engine would rattle a bit on start up and after installing a Motorcraft 820S filter it didn't rattle anymore. I also was supplied a Baldwin filter with my coolant filter kit that I installed on my 7.3 diesel.....

well if you turn right, unless road racing, you'd hit the wall! My guess is that would be bad for the oil filter! LOLOLOL

If you can get it, run the fl1a. I have had a lot of trouble out of fram. They are cheap filters. At the dealership I used to work at, I was removing a filter and the housing tore loose from the rest of the filter...I almost ripped my hand open. On the honda my wife used to have, she had a filter that had a needle sized pin hole in it. the filter was up on the back side of the engine, no way something could have got up there and hit it. I can't say how well they filter but they are made cheap.

I've never heard of a Fram filter killing an engine.

You guys make a huge fuss of nothing. They're made cheap so they can be sold cheap. But where is the incident record of this causing problems?

You can use cheaper materials and still have a good filter. It's called engineering.

They're not sold any cheaper then several brands, just made cheaper. As said before long ago I used Fram and had NO ticking sounds at start up. Then over time I started hearing "ticking sounds" at start ups. Thru several Fram oil changes later, others on line having same noises realizing it was the Fram filter. For me, that's a problem, a filter causing ticking and other don't. Fram, all done.
