so ive been researching exhaust ideas and im really torn between turn downs or having tips exit the rear. My car is currently a 6 and may stay that way for a while but my exhaust is shot and sounds like crap. So im gonna go ahead and do something about it and probably install duals. Ive seen tips exit the rear with out the GT rear valence and it doesn't look bad but im not sure if id like it that way or just getting the dual exhaust valence. Then again, out of sight out of mind works for me too with turndowns. Whats everyones thoughts? Pics too if you don't mind

Thanks

Why hide duals?
Why advertise duals? To show off? They have emblems for that to.
I currently have chrome tips on my duals, what it came with, and went so far as to buy the trumpets and GT Valance before I changed my mind. After looking at more and more I grew tired of the GT wannabe idea and am now sold on the turn downs when I need new exhaust.. They can be "hidden," tucked up behind the valance when done right thus allowing the rumble as the only clue. Plus makes it harder to fall for the bannana in the tail pipe.:postwhore:

In cases where the factory made accommodations in the valance for integrating tips, I'm all for the tips.

In cases where the valance has no relief or hole, turn-downs are a must, as any type of tip or straight-pipe dangling out the bottom looks poor.

Either way, I'm 50/50, tips through the GT valance, or turn-downs barely peeking out below the standard valance.... :)

I couldn't agree more. I can't stand tips that project too far from the valance.

Or out the side in front of the rear wheels ala 65 GT350.

I have to change my opinion and agree as above. Solid rear valence you must do turndowns as slanted pipe hanging down looks worse.

No brainer for me. I have a '65 concours convertible. Turn-downs are the only option. Not going to cut up my rear valance to try and make it look like a GT. Then I would have to hang a bunch of parts on the car and ruin it's pure early '65 looks. The sound is the only thing I need. Out of sight, but not out of earshot. Besides, if you don't turn 'em down, the rear valance collects black coal dust like its going out of style.

Here's my take on it. Turn downs are more formal, like wearin a jacket to the dance and lookin good for the lady. Tips are more casual, like wearin a white T-shirt or a tang top (yet still lookin good for the lady). Both can look good and fitting depending on the owner's style and intent he/she hopes to achieve with the build.

With the right stance, wheels, etc. a car doesn't need to rely on pipes sticking out the back to be noticed/appreciated. I've seen plenty of these examples and wouldn't change a thing. As for me, for the '68 Fastback, I'm going to go with 2.75" tips protruding just enough to be noticed out back but not too far so is uncomplimentary to the body lines of the back tail. Kinda like a couple big gun barrels feintly being seen when looking into a dark room.

I vote 'chrome' turn downs but sticking out a hair of an inch just past the rear valance

Just put a pic of each on your mirror to stare at for a week every morning and pick the one you like better.

What you're asking is like asking us blonde vs brunette. Pure personal opinion.

Well, since you asked!

Quiet turn downs.

wow thanks for all the replies. I understand this really is purely personal preference but I really wanted to hear peoples thoughts on them. I figured it would be pretty much split even on who prefers what. Thanks and Ill just have to decide what id like to look at when I open the garage door lol

None of these ideas came to fruition. . .

I used to have the tips sticking straight out the back, but after a few months, I noticed everybody did. When I had it redone, I went with the turn downs peeking out behind the valance. If the valance had openings or notches for duals then I would go that route again.

To be correct with mine, I have valance with duals. As only factory S & K code cars came with dual exhaust. I actually made my exhaust installer follow exhaust tip install specs listed in the Ford shop manual.
I do like turn downs if tucked up neatly as in 22GT's pic.

I like tips cut at the same angle as the rear roll pan "

HA, your nuts, I looked at that picture and thought what a good lookin car-exhaust is tucked up there nice and clean, different color combo-kinda old school...I like it :loco:.
